How Does Schlage Lock Work?

The way that Schlage locks work is by using pins that are positioned on different levels within the lock. Inserting your key into the Schlage lock will push down on each of these pins until they reach their lowest point.
Once all of the pins have reached their lowest point, they will all be able to rotate into place and allow you to turn your Schlage key one more notch and open up your door. This process is very similar in concept to how an old-fashioned padlock worked: You would insert your key into one side of the padlock and turn it until all of the pins were pushed down flat against their respective springs. They would spring back into place at this point, allowing you to remove your padlock from whatever it was attached to.
Schlage Lock Blinks Green but won’t Open: Why?
If your Schlage deadbolt is not working, you may have a problem with the bolt. The bolt is the part that slides back and forth to lock or unlock your door. The most common reason you may have an issue with your bolt is if it is jammed in one position. Here are some common reasons why your Schlage lock may be blinking green:
Your Door may be Locked
The green light can mean that the lock is in an unlocked state and ready to open. However, the lock must be in a locked state before it unlocks. The green light also blinks when you use your Schlage Sense app to lock or unlock your door.
If the green light is solid, the lock is locked and cannot be opened until you unlock it with your keypad or app.
Check Power
If your Schlage lock is blinking green, it’s a good idea to check the battery compartment. If the batteries are low or dead, the Schlage deadbolt will not unlock even if you have the correct code. You can simply replace the batteries with alkaline batteries.
If you’re using a mechanical keypad, you need to ensure that nothing isn’t anything blocking the keypad from working properly. If something is blocking the keypad, try removing it and then turning on your lock again. The Schlage deadbolt should now be able to open with ease.
Your Lock may be Jammed
If the light on your Schlage Connect Touchscreen Deadbolt or Schlage Sense Deadbolt is blinking green, this indicates that the lock is jammed. The cause of the jam can vary, but the most common causes are:
- A key that is stuck in the keyway.
- A misaligned keyway (i.e., a key that is not inserted all the way).
- A key that does not have enough torque to unlock it.
To correct this issue, follow these steps:
Remove any keys from your lock and close the door behind you so that it engages with the deadbolt. Then press and hold both of your Schlage Sense buttons at once until they blink blue. This will ensure no bad codes in memory that could be causing problems with opening your door.
If there are no bad codes in memory, press both of your Schlage Sense buttons again until they blink blue again, and then hold both buttons for ten seconds without releasing either button until the light turns off on its own, this means that there were no bad codes found.
Lock Is in Programming Mode
The Schlage lock is programmed by default to beep when it detects that it has been moved from one location to another. The lock will also beep when it senses that the batteries are low or if there is a communication problem between the lock and keypad. These beeps can be turned off by following these steps:
- Press and hold the Lock button until the LED light blinks green rapidly.
- Enter your four-digit code and press OK twice without releasing the Lock button in between.

You need to understand that the locks have their own trouble codes, and as long as there is a code, then the LED will blink. If a User Code were entered incorrectly 10 times, the master lock would send a trouble code.
