Choosing the Right Grout Line Size for Tiles

There are rules and guidelines regarding how thick the grout line should be when installing wall or floor tiles.  In most scenarios, the size of the grout line is determined by a design perspective rather than the requirements.

It’s a general rule that all the floor tiles need 1/8 inches or more prominent grout lines.  Large-format tiles, for example, the 18 by 18 inches or larger, look great when the grout line is narrow and is filled with the appropriate color that matches the tile.  Typically, using thin grout lines in larger tiles makes the floor appear like a single slab was used.

What is the specific grout line size for the 6 by 24 tile?  1/8 inches grout line space is enough for the 6 by 24 tile.  It’s a narrow space in comparison to the size of the tile.  Therefore, it will give your wall or floor excellent aesthetics by making it smooth and with a good sense of continuity.

Self-spacing wall tiles, for example, the four by four design often used in bathrooms and kitchens, are common.  They have lugs, which are little protrusions that fit against surrounding tiles and produce an automated grout spacing of 1/32 to 1/16 inch.  Because the tiles must be piled during installation for adequate support, wall grout lines rarely exceed 1/16 inch.

A narrow grout line of roughly 1/16 inches is possible if the flooring tile is consistent.  Installing rectified tile flooring with narrow grout lines reduces care requirements and makes your home or workplace look great.

Unfortunately, due to limited “wiggle room” during installation, it may be more difficult to achieve the 1/16 grout line size.  Unsanded grout is ideal for small gaps of up to 1/8″ wide.

When there is substantial size variation among the tiles or tiles with lugs are utilized, standard size grout line widths — 1/8 to 1/4 inch — require sanded grout.  Because a medium-sized grout line is simpler to work with and can usually hide minor flaws, it is frequently chosen by both professionals and the typical DIY homeowners.

Grout joint widths of 3/8 to 1/2 inches are required for tiles that differ in size and pattern.  Sanded grout will be required for large grout joints.  Large grout line widths are required when marble flooring is installed in different sizes with recurring patterns like the Versailles pattern.

Grout Line Size Options

Grout lines will range in thickness from 1/16 inches to 3/16 inches.  It’s worth noting that using the small-size grout line lengthens the tile installation process.

  • 3/16 inches

3/16 inches grout size is recommended for the Ceramic Tile line.  It’s big enough to leave adequate room for natural size variations and perfect the handmade tiles’ unpleasant edges.

  • 3/8 Inches

The 3/8 inch grout space is typically the industry standard for thin glazed bricks.  When doing the construction works using brick, you need to know the grout space you will use early.

That is important to help you know the appropriate coverage that you should order for you to complete the project as planned.

  • 1/8 Inches

The 1/8 inches grout size mainly features rectified and clean edges.  The hand-painted tiles collection features a rectified appearance with a cut edge.  Rectified edges fit well with smaller grout sizes because the tile has a clear cut, unlike in the case of other handmade tiles.

Rectified tiles have little to no irregularities. Therefore less grout spacing is needed between each piece.  1/8 inches grout space will make your floor or wall layering flow nicely from one tile to the next.

  • 1/16 Inches

The 1/16 inches grout size is ideal for the Glass Tile Line.  The clean edges of the glass allow for a small and tight installation.  It’s not recommended that you install any product with a grout line space of less than 1/16 inches, but you can always opt for a bigger size.

Depending on your structure and design, Grout line spaces can be adjusted to capture different sizes.  However, you need to know that when the grout joint is too small, there might be variations from one tile to another, making the installation appear sloppy.

Therefore, most tile installation professionals will always advise you to go for larger straighter grout line sizes.  It’s solely an aesthetic decision that will guide you to go for tighter or larger grout sizes.

Currently, most people prefer a small grout space, but the decision is appropriate if you’re handling the handmade tiles.

Keep in mind that grout space on your floor or wall is essential.  It serves to fill voids, relieve layering stress, and make the tiles straight.  If the grout line size is too small, the tile can chip out at a stress point when the grout gets dry.  Stress from people and objects around the house can be an issue if you’ve tight grout space.

A tight grout line is essential for glass tile installations because they’re too sensitive, and excessive stress can make them crack.

What Should You Consider When Choosing The Grout Line Size?

The Amount of Size Variation between Tiles: Since all Fireclay is produced by hand, there can be significant differences in thickness and size from one tile to another.  Bigger grout spaces are recommended for the handmade tile to accommodate size and thickness anomalies.

Tile Size: Tile size is considered when selecting a grout size.  Wider-sized handmade tiles have size and thickness fluctuations, necessitating a giant grout joint to hide the irregularities and provide a more uniform installation.

Where the Tile Is Installed: The area where the tile is installed is considered when selecting the grout line size.  For example, for better traction, broader grout lines should be used in floor installations.

When there is a change in the slope of a surface, the grout size should also be addressed.  The grout will slant from one tile to the next if your surface isn’t levelled up well.  Remember that when tiling over a corner, the grout joint will open up, and when tiling into a recess, the grout joint tends to narrow.
